General Thomas-Robert Bugeaud, French general during the French Revolution, was born in 1797. He received a military education at Strasbourg in 1805 and in 1808 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. In 1811 he served with the French army during the Russian War of 1812. Bugeaud served with distinction at the battle of Leipzig in 1813.

He married in 1814 and received command of a regiment of infantry in 1817. From this position he was promoted to brigadier general in 1821. In 1822, Bugeaud was sent to Spain with his regiment to fight against Napoleonic forces loyal to Ferdinand VII. After the French invasion of Spain, Bugeaud commanded Spanish troops that fought alongside Gen.

Moreau’s troops against the royalists in Catalunya during the Peninsular War (1808-1814).5 His most famous triumph occurred when he captured Madrid after defeating the Spanish royalists led by Marshal Torres Vedras on May 7, 1823.6 He was later made General Inspector of Infantrymen in Spain, during which time he restored civil government in Barcelona under Spanish rule.7 Bugeaud died on March 12, 1830, while serving as Inspector General of Infantrymen in Spain.
